Sunset Elementary:

Sunset Elementary School is located at the corner of Green and 7th Street. It houses 14 regular classrooms and 301 students. The original building was constructed in 1955 with additions in 1960 and 1978. An auditorium/lunchroom, gymnasium, library, computer center, and music room support regular classroom activities. The school serves students kindergarten through fourth grade.

Sunset's staff concentrates on reading and writing skills along with mathematics. In addition to the core curriculum, speech therapy, special education, Title I, and counseling are an integral part of Sunset's program. Children are given a good educational foundation to help them succeed as they continue through the grades.

There is a very active volunteer program which helps support student progress and activities. Visitors are welcome at Sunset anytime.

Upcoming News & Events:

Adding a Fourth Elementary School & Grade Reconfiguration:
All construction and school renovations will not be completed until the fall of 2009.   Therefore, next year, all students will attend the school they normally would have attended for the previous 27 years.   When building renovations are completed in the fall of 2009, we will reconfigure our grades to accommodate Preschool through 5 th grade at four elementary schools. The present CIS will remain a 5th & 6th grade building next year and be converted into a fourth elementary school the following year. The only exception will be that Ridgeview will pilot an onsite preschool next fall.

New Attendance Area Boundaries:

Redrawing current school attendance area boundaries will affect a large number of students.   We are currently mapping where all school children live, by grade (preschool through 5 th ) to determine population densities of students in within Moffat County. Unfortunately, when we make this switch in the fall of 2009, we will add a transition for some students.   There is simply no way to prevent this. When we reconfigure our schools, we will go from three elementary schools to four elementary schools.   Ridgeview, East and Sunset will have 2 sections of each grade, instead of three sections what we currently have.   CIS will have the facility capacity to increase up to 3 sections per grade.   This effectively means that approximately one-third of the students will move to a different school than the one they are currently attending beginning in fall of 2009.   We will evaluate potential new boundaries and have opportunity for parent input in late fall of 2008. Obviously, bus routes will also be significantly impacted.

School Calendar:
Our school calendar has been adjusted to accommodate construction. The first day for students is September 2nd.

Start and dismissal times - Bus Schedules:
Start and dismissal times have also been changed to accommodate the new calendar.   In order to maintain the current amount of time Moffat County students go to school, we have added 25 minutes on to the daily schedule.   For a variety of reasons, the 25 minutes of time will be added to the end of the day.   Bus pick-up times will remain the same.   Bus drop-off times will basically be 25 minutes later than they were this year.   Here are the new start and dismissal times for the 2008-2009 school year:

SCHOOL START DISMISSAL
Preschool - AM 7:45 AM 11:00 AM
Preschool - PM 11:50 PM 3:05 PM
Kindergarten - AM 8:00 AM 11:15 AM
Kindergarten - PM 12:10 PM 3:25 PM
All Elementary Schools 8:00 AM 3:25 PM
Craig Intermediate School 8:15 AM 3:35 PM
Craig Middle School 8:10 AM 3:35 PM
Moffat County High School 8:10 AM 3:40 PM

PreSchool Pilot Program
We will be piloting a decentralized preschool program at Ridgeview this year. The plan is to have a completely decentralized preschool program by the 2009-10 school year. The purpose of the pilot is to work out all of the "bugs" before implementing the program in totality. Sarah Hepworth, Julie Baker, Mike Taylor, and Joel have been working on plans for the past couple of months.  Kim Maneotis and Heather Higgins will staff the preschool.  We are also going to make the Ridgeview Preschool times from 7:45 to 11:00 AM and 11:50 AM to 3:05 PM. There will be a couple of meetings in the second week of June to talk to parents and others about this pilot program.

All-day Kindergarten
:
Although we will begin receiving phased-in funding from the state for implementation of all-day kindergarten, we are not planning on bringing all-day kindergarten to the board for consideration until next fall, for anticipate implementation in the fall of 2009.   We will not have a pilot program next year, but continue with our existing extended day program and use additional state funding to offset this cost. We will bring a recommendation to the board next fall, to implement all-day kindergarten in fall 2009, after our construction is complete and we have facilities to support this change. The current building renovations have been designed to support all-day kindergarten.
